Finding Strength in Isaiah 41:10

Isaiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Isaiah 41:10 is a powerful verse of reassurance, encouragement, strength and hope when walking through anything challenging. I have been dwelling on this verse for the last couple of days and it has helped me get out of my head when I tend to go down the rabbit trail of worrying unnecessarily, especially things that I cannot control.

I broke this verse down in segments, taking it slow and allowing the truths and promises in this verse to sink in deep enabling my focus to shift and be locked into what the verse speaks rather than letting my fears take charge. I usually do it with pen and paper, but will do my best to share it here with you all.

So do not fear, for I am with you – the verse begins with a directive – do not fear. When the Lord says – do not fear, take notice, He will have a plausible reason for the why of it. The second half of that line explains why – For I am with you. The directive God gives come with a powerful reassurance of His presence with us. So, no matter what you are walking through, He is with you. While we always desire for the issue to be gone, sometimes God makes us walk through a particular season. We may not understand why but we can be assured that He is right there with us. Psalm 23:4 “When I walk through the darkest valley, you are with me your rod and your staff comfort me.”

Before we move on to the next part of this verse I want to bring to attention the very first word in this verse ‘so’, this made me look back to the preceeding verses.

Isaiah 41:8-9 “But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, you descendants of Abraham my friend, I took you from the ends of the earth,
from its farthest corners I called you. I said, ‘You are my servant’; I have chosen you and have not rejected you.”

These verses are spoken with context to where Israel found themselves, under Babylonian captivity, driven from their homes and feeling forgotten by God. When we read v10 that tells us ‘so do not fear’, it helps to begin with paying attention to how God engages His people in verses 8-9. He reminds them who they are or better still whose they are. In Christ, we have become His, we have been chosen. He has chosen us and called us His. This is your identity, an identity we gain from what the Lord did for us. There is nothing that compares to what He did for us to be restored to Him. Let no lies from the enemy or any fear or any trial make you feel anything but the truth that we are God’s sons and daughters.

Do not be dismayed, for I am your God – An extended time through a trial can bring with it a gamut of emotions, certain days has you feeling strong and hopeful and other days leaves you feeling dejected. The words from God here remind us to persevere through the season we find ourselves in – to not lose hope or feel discouraged and the reason we can do that is because the Lord says ‘for I am your God‘. A reassurance and reminder that God is ‘your‘ God. He makes it personal here, He knows you intimately, he sees you, he knows your worry and your concerns, you are not overlooked or forgotten. God is for you. He is sovereign and He loves you and cares for you.

I will strengthen you and help you – He will provide what we need to face our days. He is our source and when we sit at His feet, let your heart and mind focus on God and allow Him to pour His strength, peace and comfort into you.

And He will help you – a wonderful reminder that our worry cannot solve anything. May we lay our burden at the Lord’s feet for He is the only one who can create a change, both in the circumstance we are praying for and also in our perspective and approach of how we navigate the season we are in.

This powerful verse ends with a promise – I will uphold you, with my righteous right hand. God promises to lift you up. When you feel like you have been waiting for a while to see the hand of God move in a particular situation, be rest assured that God is working. He will lift you up with His righteous right hand. His right hand is symbolic of His power and greatness. Hold onto this promise with a fierceness that will keep dismay/discouragement at bay.

Lord, for anyone walking through a challenging time, help us to hold these words from scripture close to our hearts to strengthen, reassure and fill us with hope. We give you praise and may we honour you in all that we do. Amen.
