Presence

Mark 1:32-34a “That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. The whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who had various diseases.”

What has your to-do list looked like recently? Has your list of tasks or your daily checklists felt similar to the verse above where the whole town was gathered at the door for Jesus to attend to them.

Life can get busy. Most times when you ask someone how they have been, the answer tends to include how busy they are. And at this time of the year, throw in the extras, decorating, entertaining, events, shopping, etc. In the midst if it all, how consistent are you in keeping Jesus your everyday priority? Every year leading up to Christmas, I have to remind myself to be intentional with not getting caught up with doing too much or making everything perfect.

Mark 1 gives us a glimpse into how Jesus often spent his days, teaching and meeting the needs of the multitude of people around him. But in the midst of it all, he never lost sight of staying connected with God through prayer. Mark 1:35 “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.”

And when present with the disciples or anyone else he engaged in conversation with, he was never rushed or distracted but present with them in that moment.  Each encounter he had was important to him and it was impactful and powerful. One of the best gifts we can give to our loved ones and those around us, is our attention. Take a breath, slow down and be present with the person you are engaging with in the moment and be aware that each of those moments is an opportunity to reflect God and glorify Him.

As this time of the year tends to pull us all to be preoccupied with many things, let us not rush past the gift God has given us, to be in His presence, but rather press into it every single day and may we remember to the give the gift of being present with those around us.

God Bless.

  1. I was thrilled to see the title of your post today because I’ve decided that “Presence” will be my one word for 2024! 😁 The word started coming up a lot in many things I read, listened to, etc. It started around mid-November, and it really struck a chord. I will write a little more about it in a future post. But what you wrote here really resonated. God’s presence is always with us. But you’re right, this time of year, we miss out on that when we let the hustle and bustle of the holidays consume us. I pray through the coming weeks we can lean into His presence as we remember the reason for the season. And as you said, a gift we can give to our loved ones is our attention. It’s sad that with all the distractions of our world, that is something that is becoming rare. I appreciate how you pointed us back to Jesus and used His life as an example. What a gift we have in the Lord and the Bible. He always shows us the way. Thank you, Manu! An excellent post! Blessings, my friend ♥️

  2. Thank you for the encouragement to be present in the moment. Whoever we are with at the time or the things we are doing need to have our full attention. There are so many things we can get caught up in, as you mentioned. I try and remember quality is better than quantity. Thanks Manu. Enjoy your weekend 🤗

  3. My to-do list doesn’t look like Jesus’ 😂
Just prior to Thanksgiving, I had to constantly remind myself that it was not time to get caught up in the sensationalism of Christmas. I wanted to stay mindful about Thanksgiving, until it was completed…giving it its full due. Now I’m ready for Christmas, still with little to no intention of getting caught up in anything/anyOne, but Jesus‼️

    1. I have to be intentional too with not getting caught up with it all but remembering what is important. Getting caught up with no one else but Jesus- like how you said it.
      Bless you sis 💙

    1. May Jesus presence be your greatest Christmas present – I like that Mandy.
I think we can always grow in being present with God. And there is nothing like today to begin being more intentional with leaning into his presence.
God bless you my sister in Christ.

  4. Amen 🙏🏾. So many people report loneliness, isolation and sadness at this time. It’s mostly because Christmas has been so commercialised that we forget the true meaning. Being still, spending time with Jesus and loving on those around us to extend his love is the greatest gift of all. 🩷😘💖🎊🎉

  5. If someone asks ME a question, and they appear to not be paying attention to my response, I stop talking. Life is full of distractions, but when someone is involved in a mutual conversation, they shouldn’t be treated like one. 🙂

  6. I have to laugh because I literally just replied to your last message saying how busy things have been! Good reminder, Manu! I’m going to pray God helps me to be present with others and not rush time with Him this Christmas season. Thank you!

    1. I think being busy just come with this time of the year but we can be aware that it gets busy and choose to be intentional in taking some time with God and with our interactions through the day.

  7. Such a great reminder in the busyness of this season to take the time to be present with whomever we are with in that moment. Those moments go by quickly. Thank you, Manu! God bless you during this special season.

  8. Hi Manu, I agree that one of the best gifts we can give others is our full attention, the gift of being present and caring. It is easy to be distracted and always in a hurry. Your post is a wonderful reminder to slow down and remember what is important – being constant in prayer and Christlike in our actions. 💖🎄🌺

  9. Lots of wisdom in these words! I love this sweet reminder of the importance of focusing in this moment and enjoying the here and now with those we love or come into contact with. For some, we may be the only expression of Jesus’ love that they have the opportunity to experience.
I like what Dawn said too that quality is more than quantity, I try and remember this when I visit my grandma at the nursing home. I may not get there as much as I’d like but I’m learning to slow down and take the time to do so and then on top of that to really make our time together count!

    1. Thank you so much Alicia. I have to always remind myself to be in the moment rather than rush through with what I have to get done. And making the time with your grandma matter is valuable and wise to do.
