Galatians – No Other Gospel

Salvation is by faith alone.

Salvation is by Grace through Faith

We continue in our Galatians study.  We had looked at the background and Paul’s greeting with his emphasis on him being an Apostle sent by God.

Galatians 1:6-10 “I (Paul) am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse! Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

Paul wastes no time in pleasantries, with directness he gets to the matter in issue – a false gospel. The different gospel in question here is one that the Judaisers were spreading. It is interesting to note that although Paul refers to this gospel as a different gospel, it was not a complete shift to what Paul was teaching. The Judaisers did not remove Jesus out of the equation, they added something to it. They were not opposed to talking about Jesus, or the Lord’s work on the cross, but implied that it is not enough.

For us: What Paul battled in that day, we battle too, it is worthwhile to note that often false teaching is not presented in a completely new package, but rather in a slightly different one. This makes false teaching that much harder to identify. As followers of Christ, it is imperative that we read and study the word, such that we recognise when something does not align with God’s word. And with prayer, ask the Lord for discernment, guidance and protection with all that we can be exposed to.

As we talk about false teaching, it is important that we go back to basics as Paul did in his letter.

What is the Gospel – It is the message that Jesus paid the penalty for our sins when He gave His life on the cross so that we can be made righteous through faith. We are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Jesus Christ.

What were the Judaisers teaching – They were insisting on elevating the following of the law alongside Christ’s work on the cross, such that only then it would be sufficient to save.

When Jesus was on the cross, the final words he uttered was “It is finished” “When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ‘It is finished,’ and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit” (John 19:30). The work necessary for our salvation is complete. It is done.

Note that when Paul talks about this false teaching, he refers to it as perverting the gospel. The Greek word for pervert can be translated to ‘turn around’. A perverted gospel is one that turns our focus away from Jesus and His work.

Why did God give the Law? – It is necessary to look into why the law was given, as over time, the Jews began to hold the law as a pathway to be made right with God.

Romans 3:20 says, “Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.”

God’s law served as a bedrock of guiding ideals to help His people understand His righteousness, their sinful condition and the need they have for Him to be made right with Him. The Law in itself could not and did not save.

Besides the law, the Pharisees over time included a multitude of rules surrounding each law as a hedge for man to follow a particular law. Although it seemed to be implemented with the intention to enable man to keep the law, what it eventually ended up being was a legalistic approach to righteous living. For example: On the Sabbath, it was unlawful to work, a rule added by the Pharisees was that only a certain distance could be walked on that day to not breach the law. Another example, a scribe could not carry his writing materials on the day as that would mean he was carrying his work tools, as on the sabbath no work was meant to be done.

Salvation is by grace through faith. Satan is a master deceiver; his intentions is to twist the truth and mislead people, ultimately drawing their focus and worship away from Jesus. With a works-based approach to be made right with God, it minimizes what Jesus did and elevates the works of man.

Paul cautions the Galatians to focus and pay attention to the message over the messenger; if anyone, including an angel or even him were to preach something different, it is to be considered a false gospel. This applies to us too, however compelling someone may seem, all that they say is to be tested against scripture.

And those who teach falsely, their end is certain- eternal condemnation.

Jesus says in Mathew 18:6But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.”

Paul accentuates his caution by highlighting his motives which was serving Christ and not pleasing people, a valuable reminder for each one of us today too no matter what area of service we find our calling in.

For us: What are the ways we can ensure that the gospel we believe and share is the true gospel?

What are some ways we might impose certain rules on ourselves or others that we think is required to be the kind of Christians we need to be?

Prayer: Lord, may we remain alert to false teachers and their teaching. May we immerse ourselves in your word that we waste no time in entertaining such teachings. Guard our hearts and minds, Lord. Amen.

God Bless.

  1. I really appreciate your point about the necessity for us to study the Bible. It is important for us to know the truth. This helps us to better discern false teaching. And it also helps ensure that our own words are based on truth. Thank you, Manu! An insightful post!! 🦋

    1. Absolutely. There is so much false teaching out there, the best way to enable ourselves to discern what is true and not is to study the word of God.
      Thank you my friend 💙💐

  2. It’s important for us to go back to the basics and test everything against the scriptures as you stated. That way we don’t end up deceived by others or by ourselves. God’s word is truth and the final authority. And the focus should always remain on the finished work of Jesus Christ. Thanks Manu, enjoy your weekend.

  3. You’re right, Manu. False teaching can be difficult to recognize. Sometimes it’s even based on scripture, but taken out of context. A background of the whole of scripture is highly valuable.

  4. First off, I love that painting! Did you paint it? Second, great questions to ponder! Nowadays, there are many false teaching circulating society, and from pastors in pulpits! We truly must be discerning and ask God to help us to abide in the truth. As a side note, I used to have Galatians 1:10 on a notecard hanging from my door. It is easy to fall into the trap of people pleasing. That verse was a good reminder to consider who I really wanted to please. Blessings, Manu!

    1. The painting- no I did not. Wish I could paint like that. So true that there is so much false teaching circulating nowadays and we must be so discerning.

I love that you had that verse hanging on your door. It is a great reminder to hold onto. Thank you friend and I pray you have a blessed weekend.

  5. Regeneration always precedes Faith…

Your posts are always interesting to read, and your heart is with Jesus. So please take thus response with careful thought.

You said, “when we believe and place our faith in Him, we are justified and made righteous.”

Regeneration always precedes faith. Here is why…

Imagine going to a cemetery with a glass of water in hand. Looking around you cry out, “ I hold in my hands a glass of water that will give eternal life to all who will come forth and from it drink. You will be given new life, be born- again, regenerated, and be justified, that is made righteous, and given the gift of the faith of Jesus with which you will be able to believe in Jesus and proclaim Him to be Lord.”

Who, then, will respond of their own will?

No one for the dead cannot respond unless “First” they must given life(regenerated). So it is with the spiritually dead. They, too, must be given life (regenerated) before they can respond and, with the gift of faith given them, believe in Jesus.

That is why regeneration always precedes faith.

Respectfully, your statement quoted above put the cart before the horse, so to speak.

    1. Thank you for pointing that out. I can see how my words seem to come across. I have corrected it so that it is not understood wrongly. God must do a miraculous work in people’s lives before they are able to believe in Christ unto salvation. As a result, all the glory belongs to God.

    1. So true Nancy. Some of things I hear from so called preachers/clergy shock and surprise me. Deception is so very real and I know that staying close to God and in His word are the best ways to equip oneself to be able to discern.

      Thank you so much Nancy.

  6. Hi Manu!! “But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to and different from that which we preached to you, let him be accursed (anathema, devoted to destruction, doomed to eternal punishment (Gal 1:8)”
I love that Paul repeated it…a second time. Just in case you didn’t hear me the first time🤣
I also love how Paul exposes himself as a ‘former’ people pleaser, like the rest of the Pharisees…formerly trying to please his ‘party’ and the Roman government, as well. That’s just too much work!!
Like you said, Manu..and Jesus said, first…IT IS FINISHED!!
JESUS has done all the work!!
May He grant us the Spirit to believe and confess…and to read His Word as we draw nearer to Him…day by day…til He comes.💕

  7. I always appreciate your insights, Manu. I’m working on my Bible study habit. I’ve tried starting at the beginning before and always lose speed. I prefer diving into the books that call me. I’m currently in John.

    1. Thank you Crystal. I have tried that too and it never worked for me and neither did reading the Bible in a year. I never grasped much from it. But I read now as I feel led and take it slow.
The one thing I got to make sure is doing it consistently and allowing room to let the spirit minister to me through the word and not rushing to commentaries etc.

  8. Thank you for your gracious reply. Sometimes I come across to authoritative and God has a way of humbling me. He did so again through your response. It is not by what I say but only by how God uses what I write to achieve His will. I hope you will do the same if you disagree with anything I may write… 😺

  9. This is a current issue in churches. The wording and discernment of scripture are being updated to align with current issues. As you said, we need to discern what does and does not align with Jesus’ message and follow Jesus. Have a wonderful week, Manu! 💕🐕‍🦺🌺

  10. Bless you Manu. It’s funny when Paul asked, “O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you.” He spared no punches and truly, often the truth is an offence. It’s better to be frank and risk hurting someone’s feelings, if it is aimed at turning them back to God, rather than pacify people and risk them going to hell. Many many false teachings are rampant in this time with social media, but we have to remain vigilant and hold fast to the truth. 🙏🏾❤️

All false teaching has grains of truth in it. I am so thankful that God has gifted you with a discerning heart, Manu. I am thankful for your heart of exhortation and encouragement. May God reveal to us quickly when our message deviates at all from His Good News Gospel!!!!

  12. Amen! The cry of my heart is that Christians would treasure the Word of God and determine in their hearts to know it well. That is the way to have discernment, which is so needed in today’s world. Great post, Manu! Blessings!
