My God and My Abba

As the year began, my scripture reading took off from the very beginning in Genesis.

What does the very first chapter of Genesis speak to us about God?

God our Creator

Gen 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

The very first sentence identifies the very existence of anything and everything from Him.

Gen 1:27 “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”   He is our creator and we are made in His image.

God’s word is Powerful

Gen 1:3And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.”

God spoke everything into existence. His word is powerful. When God speaks there is a flow of power that brings about what he intends.

Take the time and listen to what God is saying to you, one of the ways He speaks is through His word, so immerse yourself in it to understand and know Him better.

A God of Order and Understanding

He created everything in order. The light and dark, then the seas and land were separated and only then the plants and animal life were brought into existence. He could have spoken everything into existence at once. But He did it in a way that makes sense to us, we may not understand it all, but we do get an understanding of who He is and can appreciate His work.

A Provider

Gen 1:11-12 “Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.”

All the fruit, grain and vegetation were created mature (yielding fruit) and were already ready to reproduce. We see God as a provider even before He created man.

The act of creation shows us His absolute greatness, authority and power. When He speaks there is power and things happen, literally out of nothing (Gen 1:2a “Now the earth was formless and empty”) and no chaos, no disorder. It shows His Power and Sovereignty over everything.

As we begin the year, there is an inclination to think of what may lie ahead in the coming year. Or your year may already have had a rocky start. Whatever it may be, hold onto what Genesis 1 reveals to us about God and step into the days ahead with the strength that comes from knowing ‘We are His and He is our God’. Trust and surrender into His all powerful and caring hands and be rest assured that we have an all mighty, powerful and sovereign God whom we call our Lord and our Heavenly Father who is watching over us and will never forsake us.

Psalm 90:2  “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”

God Bless.

  1. Thank you for this reminder that God is there, caring for us, and providing for us. We may not know what tomorrow holds, but we know who holds tomorrow. What comfort that brings. Thank you, Manu! A great reflection for the New Year. ♥️

    1. Thank you my friend. Focusing more on God through the year rather than the situation we find ourselves in will help bolster our faith so that we are not easily shaken with worry or fear.

  3. Love your insights, Manu, in a passage of scripture that is quite familiar to many of us. It IS interesting that God chose to create the universe in stages rather than all at once. ‘Never thought of that before! Perhaps he wanted us to understand–from the very beginning–that he values process. Immediacy is not always necessary. We, on the other hand, want certain things NOW, while God often requires us to wait. Might it be he desires we too seek value in process? James 1:2-4 gives us good indication that the answer is YES!

  4. As you said, God spoke everything into existence. We should find peace, feeling loved and secure in His greatness, authority, and power. Realizing we are His people, and He is our God. What a blessing it is to have a loving, all powerful Father.
Manu, have a wonderful week! 💖🌷🌺

  5. Thankful He is our Creator which is another reason to trust that He’s absolutely in control!

You used the words trust and surrender which are my best friend’s 2024 words, had to send her your post!

  6. Manu, I love the points you extracted from Genesis one. This is an occasion I’m grateful to be behind on reading other blogs. God reveals Himself to each of us in different ways. There are themes we all tend to note and then subtle whispers one hears only by spending time with our Creator. Your writing testifies to time with your Abba.

My post on Genesis one and two is finished. It’s scheduled to go live in 6 hours. We share some similar themes and yet different highlights.
